Social Emotional and
Academic Learning
Is your child in tears the night before a test? Do they complain of stomach or headache the morning of school? Are you hearing that your child is “acting out” in the classroom?
If so, your student may be struggling with underlying social-emotional concerns impacting their academic behavior and performance. Social-Emotional Academic Learning (SEAL) skills are tailored to support students with these difficulties. These skills provide an opportunity to acquire and effectively apply the attitude, knowledge and skills that are necessary to understand, manage and regulate emotions and behaviors. Specific skills that may be addressed include:
Coping with stress and anxiety related to school/homework
Reframing negative statements, assertiveness
Understanding one’s strengths and ways to build on them
Handling rejection, teasing and bullying
Coping with frustration related to learning

These sessions are designed for elementary and middle school students and their parents, students who have a diagnosis of a learning or attention disorder, as well as those who struggle with social-emotional concerns including ADHD, anxiety and/or depression. Individuals do NOT need a formal diagnosis to participate.
Executive Functioning (EF) refers to a set of skills that allow us to organize and plan our behavior and monitor our thoughts in order to work more efficiently and effectively. The brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses. EF Groups will teach students specific, developmentally-appropriate skills and ways of thinking to help them succeed in the classroom and at home. When children have the opportunity to develop executive function skills, they experience lifelong benefits. These skills are crucial for learning and development. EF Groups also provide the time and support needed to apply those skills and routines as students complete their own homework assignments.
Improving time management and organization skills
Coping with feeling overwhelmed with homework/academic tasks
Understanding one’s strengths and ways to build on them
Responding flexibly to changing in schedule or routine, flexible thinking
Initiating tasks and being able to ignore distractions and resist temptations, self-monitoring
About the Group:
EF Group allows students the unique opportunity to learn and practice skills in a supportive, supervised environment making school work less stressful. This structure allows for lessons to be tailored to student’s unique needs and abilities.
Parents will be given a bi-monthly topic as well as ways to practice these skills at home.
The first half of each session will introduce a new lesson, and the second half will be focused on applying these skills while your child completes homework.
